you know you’re making progress when clothes fit better

Posted in Health at 11:35 am by Paloma Cruz

I haven’t hopped back onto a scale; I’m not doing that until November. But this morning a pair of pants that were too tight just a few weeks ago actually fit well enough to wear. No, they’re not loose, but they were comfortable again.

When your clothes start to fit again, you know you’re on the right track. So the issue of pounds won’t discourage me. My wardrobe beckons.

chocolate cupcakes

Posted in Health at 2:40 pm by Paloma Cruz

Today I had a chocolate cupcake. Just one and I had it in lieu of a snack. Still, I know it’s not the sort of thing I should be consuming.

I was good and had a nutritious lunch. I will not use that one small lapse as an excuse to throw away the whole day.

Maybe it’s that kind of decision that’s making the difference this time. If I do have a minor lapse in my “food budget” I don’t use it as an excuse to derail the whole thing. I am being a real grown up about this.

I think I’m actually commited to real change this time, and that makes all the difference in the world.

And, I admit, that cupcake was soooooo goooooood. Yummy.

into the second week

Posted in Health at 12:19 am by Paloma Cruz

Why is the second week of dieting harder than the first?

My mother always tells me that it’s the first two weeks that are the hardest, but you’d think that it would gradually get better. For some reason, with me, the second week is always the hardest.

And how sad is it that I’ve dieted often enough to know that?

But I managed to survive the day, in spite of stress and long hours.

And tomorrow is another day.

I lost 2.5 pounds

Posted in Health at 10:46 am by Paloma Cruz

There’s nothing more gratifying that seeing results when you’re dieting. If I don’t see results, I’m less likely to continue on the right path.

I re-ignited my healthy living decision last weekend, this time actually following through. It’s been a hard week. It seems like I’m hungry all the time. And since I’m trying to regulate what I eat, I want everything I see.

I lost 2.5 pounds this week. Really, by doing small things. Cutting back on calorie intake by eating a smaller dinner and regulating snacks. Making smarter food decisions when I eat out as well as when I eat in.

I haven’t begun exercising again, yet. But I will.

In the meantime, I will bask in the glow of my lost weight. And continue to be good.

being fat is bad for your career

Posted in Health at 9:06 am by Paloma Cruz

Great, as if I didn’t feel bad enough, Brazen Careerist tells me that being overweight may be hurting my career.

Being overweight or sloppily dressed is worse for your career than being a poor performer.

I’m not saying this is fair, I’m saying it’s true. So manage your weight, and manage the image you project at work, and you’ll do wonders for your career.

[snip]

Advice from Yahoo Finance:

[snip]

What makes this information particularly troubling is that so many people say they can’t make time to exercise and eat right because they need to work instead. In fact, if you’re overweight, you should probably put aside some of your work, accept that you won’t be performing as well at the office, and manage your image more closely by going to the gym.

That’s right — get rid of that perfectionist streak, do a little less work, and use that time to make yourself look better. People will perceive that you’re doing better work anyway. So instead of rationalizing why you can put work ahead of taking care of your health, start acting like a healthy person. Go to the gym at lunch, or leave work at 5 to hit the gym. Reorganize your schedule to make health a priority and your coworkers will respect you for it.

[snip]

Hmmm… that actually makes a weird sort of sense. Something to think about.

I weigh 250 pounds. Nothing fits. I feel awful about myself… sometimes.

Exactly when am I going to actually do something about it?

waiting for a better day

Posted in Health at 11:12 am by Paloma Cruz

My boss asked me if I was okay this morning. I guess my general lack of energy has made an impression.

It’s been a tough month.

I need some time off to regroup and catch my breath. Maybe after that I can come back to my professional life with energy and enthusiasm. The way I feel right now is not productive.

Caffeine is not enough. Listlessness is not solved by caffeine.

I know myself. I just need some “me” time to get back into the groove of things.

I’m sure that in a few days I’ll be back to normal.

working with a headache

Posted in Health at 12:18 pm by Paloma Cruz

My doctor put me on new medication, which is supposed to help take care of my migraines. Today I have a blinding headache that has all the symptoms of becoming a migraine. I guess the meds aren’t working.

I’ve turned off the lights in the office (the only thing on is this computer), which also took care of the humming coming off the overheads.

I hope I feel better. Otherwise I need to go home, take something heavy duty and pull the covers over me.

back ache

Posted in Health at 9:22 am by Paloma Cruz

I had a doctor’s appointment this morning, a follow-up with my chiropractor from last week. Last week I was still in some pain, but the week before and that weekend I was in severe pain.

I forget, sometimes, how much it can hurt, since it doesn’t normally get that bad.

Today is a normal day for me, some discomfort and tight muscles, but that’s it.

It’s good to have a normal day.

ways to gain more energy

Posted in Health at 12:56 am by Paloma Cruz

As someone who is always looking for an energy boost, I found this tip interesting: get a hobby. At least that’s what Life is a Journal recommends. In the recent post “5 Reasons Why Hobbies are Important” number 2 is that it Energizes your life. (Found via Lifehacker.)

If you find yourself falling through your front door after a hard day’s slog and slumping in front of the television you may be surprised to know that you do in fact have some hidden energy left. I found when I was doing a live show on community radio, even after a hard day at the office, I was able to find the energy to perform. The thought of doing the live show energized me. I got a “buzz” from doing it even though every other day of the week I would find myself not having the same energy. So if you think you are just too tired after work to do something with your spare time – if you find something you’re passionate about – you might be surprised by the energy you have.

I wonder if my blogging habit qualifies. Though, to be honest, I’ve never gotten an energy boost from it. It has, however, helped me decompress from my day.

Ririan Project gives us some great ways to boost energy with Give Yourself a Lift With These 27 Effective Power Tips. (Found via BNET.) The ones about food really caught my attention:

3. Breakfast like a king.

They don’t call it the most important meal of the day for nothing. A sensible breakfast will give you the boost you need each morning to last you through the whole day. Hey, if you don’t put gas in your car, it won’t run. Same goes for healthy meals in the morning. To stay full longer, try oats. Oats are full of fiber and low on the glycemic index which means that the sugar is released into your bloodstream slowly, keeping your energy levels constant. Oats are also packed with B vitamins, which lower stress and help convert carbohydrates into energy.

4. Avoid quick-fix foods.

Candy, chocolate, hamburgers, chicken wings, french fries, etc., all these foods are high in sugar or fat and can do a huge number on your energy levels. A quick fact: sugar puts you to sleep. It does not, as most people think, give you more energy. So cut out all those candies and chocolates, and start eating more fruits and vegetables.

5. Tea for me.

Drinking tea regularly every day has been found to increase one’s stamina. However, the type of tea you drink is very important. You should stay away from tea that comes in tea bags, because chances are these contain high levels of caffeine. Instead, buy some dried herbs from your local supermarket and boil some water with them. Natural herbal teas are healthier than the bagged ones. A combination of Siberian Ginseng extract, peppermint, and green tea is a great choice.

6. Supplement your body.

Energy is generated in each and every cell in the body through a chemical reaction, which combines fuel from food and oxygen. The catalysts that make these reactions happen are the vitamins and minerals in out diet. Supplementing our diet can boost energy levels and make up for any deficiencies. The most effective energy boosting nutrients include B complex vitamins and Co-enzyme Q10. Chromium supplements also help stabilize blood sugar levels.

7. Head for a bar.

No, not the type that serves beer, I’m talking about energy bars. Jam-packed with carbs, these bars are designed to provide fuel for a short-term energy boost. Just make sure you read the nutritional breakdown on the label, some of them can contain more fat and sugar than a regular chocolate bar.

8. Drink more water.

Again, sounds obvious, but we’re not drinking enough fluids. This helps you stay hydrated, curbs your desire for an unhealthy snack and keeps you from getting drowsy. If you’re stuck in a boring meeting and you feel yourself nodding off, a sip of water will help you regain your focus.

9. Eat lunch every day.

Too many of us think we’re too busy to stop for lunch and don’t recognize that the resultant midday slump will impact our productivity and attention span. It’s always important to supply your body with a regular input of nutrients. You don’t need to have a heavy meat and potatoes meal at noon every day, but make sure you eat something. And avoid eating while you work at your desk; take a break for lunch even if it’s only 20 minutes.

10. Snack more often.

And avoid big meals. Eating a lot in one sitting causes the blood to divert from your brain and to your digestive system. This can make you feel lethargic. Instead, try eating four or five smaller meals each day. An apple or yogurt are good choices for a quick pick-me-up. Steer clear of chocolate bars or sugary donuts. Although they create a quick boost in energy, your blood sugar levels will drop even faster afterward, and you’ll feel more tired than ever.

All worth a look. I almost never eat breakfast, always reach for quick fix foods and only recently discovered energy/protein bars. Drinking water is an ongoing challenge for someone who consumes soda religiously. All the tips make sense, especially the last: reduce your stress.
