hair update

Posted in Retail Therapy at 10:01 am by Paloma Cruz

Got a great haircut over the weekend, and went back to auburn hair. I’ve accepted the vain part of my personality that ensures that new clothes or a new hairdo will put me in a good mood.

I love my new ‘do. I’m in a great mood.

places I wish I could afford

With stress becoming a factor in my life on an ever-increasing frequency, I wish I could afford a luxury spa get-away. The Chronicle had an article on Texas spas that added to my wishlist:

Bare Minerals

Posted in Retail Therapy at 11:12 am by Paloma Cruz

I finally made the plunge and bought my starter kit for Bare Minerals. However, I kind of cheated. I got mine at my ULTA store instead of directly in response to the infomercials.

I think that I’m going to join the club and get my regularly-scheduled deliveries of foundations. Yes, I’m that pleased with it. I didn’t notice any immediate improvements in the way my skin looks with the new product versus the old liquid foundation I was using. However, after a few weeks, I can say that I have had fewer breakouts and my sking feels better.

Good enough for me.

a new place to buy bags

Posted in Retail Therapy at 9:39 pm by Paloma Cruz

If I were actually spending money right now, or anticipating being able to spend money any time in the future, I would be a lot happier about this find: Endless.

An Amazon site, it has some very nice selections of shoes and (yummy) bags. Browsing the site is a lot of fun, especially for those of us addicted to buying bags.

spending too much money on books

Posted in Retail Therapy at 12:16 am by Paloma Cruz

In the two months or so that I’ve been tracking where I spend my money, I’ve noticed two things that keep pulling me off my budget: books and eating out.

J.D. has 10 Ways to Save Money on Books, a common sense list of ways to enjoy your reading without breaking hte bank.

My favorite:

Avoid new releases
New releases sell at a premium. Sometimes you can get them cheap at Costco or Amazon. It’s best to avoid them completely. Put them on hold at the library. If you’re tempted to buy a newly-released book, ask yourself: “Why do I need to own this now? Can I wait?”

New releases are usually my impulse buy, the thing I purchase without thinking about it.

Put them on hold at the library. Put them on hold at the library.

Maybe if I repeat this, I’ll remember.

Nordstrom’s Fall Cosmetics Trend Show

Posted in Retail Therapy at 11:03 pm by Paloma Cruz

I’m busy on Saturday, 10/15, so I won’t be able to attend:

The fun starts at 8 a.m. with a class about trends in color, skincare and application techniques. Then, beauty experts will give personalized consultations.

Tickets are $15, which also includes a continental breakfast and goody bag of cosmetic samples. The ticket also can be redeemed for cosmetic purchases that day.

Nordstrom’s is at 5192 Hidalgo. 832-201-2700. (Found via Shop Girl.)

Dress for Success

Posted in Retail Therapy at 12:05 am by Paloma Cruz

I’ve been going through old links lately and found one that reminded me I have to clean my closet, and I can do it for a good cause. From Shop Girl:

As a shopping columnist, I spend my days looking for hot buys, great deals and the latest must-haves. I know, though, that not everyone can pick up a new outfit for the weekend, just because. I know that many women don’t have confidence-boosting suits in their closets for important interviews.

That’s where nonprofit organizations such as Dress for Success and the Houston Area Women’s Center lend a hand, and those of us who have so much are able to help women make a fresh start.

free stuff for the bargain hunter

Posted in Retail Therapy at 10:19 pm by Paloma Cruz

The AbsurdlyCool Freebie Finder does exactly what the title says, helps you find free stuff that’s… well, absurdly cool.

Freebie Finder is an automated free stuff aggregator. I’ve designed it to collect free stuff offers from top freebie sites, while filtering out most scams and referral pyramids.

I haven’t used it myself yet, but it looks promising. (Found via LifeHacker.)

buy groceries via Amazon

Posted in Retail Therapy at 10:20 pm by Paloma Cruz

I’ve ordered various and varied things off the Internet: makeup, clothes, insurance, airline tickets, movie tickets, shoes, books, art, financial products, flowers, and training. I never thought about ordering groceries.

I have heard of PeaPod, which was a brief experiment in Houston. I hadn’t heard that Amazon delivers groceries.

Shop Amazon Grocery Today

  • We offer more than 10,000 non-perishable grocery items–and our selection is growing every day
  • We can ship all products for free via Super Saver Shipping or Amazon Prime

Hmmmmm…..

So what can you find?

At Amazon Grocery, you’ll find longtime staples, from Kellogg’s to Jiffy Pop. You’ll find new entries, such as Kashi cereals and Kraft Easy Mac microwavable snack packets. And when we carry a brand, we’ll try to carry every flavor available: not just the most popular flavors of Jell-O, but all flavors, from apricot to wild strawberry and the 70 flavors in-between. We’re also making regional favorites like Andy Capp Hot Fries available nationwide, and making hard-to-find specialties like Zico Pure Coconut Water a standard part of our mix.

If I didn’t actually enjoy going to the grocery store, I might consider this.
