decorating tips for the fortune-challenged

Posted in News, Retail Therapy at 4:13 pm by Paloma Cruz

MSN has some great tips on how to improve your living space without going broke.

One tip to note:

Little Guest Bathroom Luxuries
Grab some tissue paper from the party aisle and some raffia trim and a few of those scented soaps from around the world, and beautifully wrap them for your guest bathroom. Pile them high in a basket with some matching hand towels by your sink, and you’re ready for company.

frugal living

Posted in Health, Retail Therapy at 5:41 am by Paloma Cruz

In my family we aren’t good at economizing. Yes, I live within a budget. Yes, I know that I don’t have all the money in the world on which to survive. However, I don’t really make big sacrifices. I buy my favorite foods. I buy snacks and candies and junk food. I eat out for lunch almost every day.

And I don’t really plan on changing any time soon.

In case my future plans are wrong, however, here’s a nifty little plan on how to feed a family of four for $45 a week.

Forty-five dollars will seem outrageously abundant to some, while it will seem miniscule to others. It is the smallest amount I was able to come up with that will provide enough supplies to an empty kitchen to feed an entire family for a week. The servings are ample and a few adjustments allow you to increase the quantities from 4 servings to 6. Newly added nutritional information makes it clear that except for sodium, these recipes are nutritious and healthy. They are low in fat and cholesterol, high in protein and rich in fiber. To reduce the sodium you can use half as much salt and bouillon as called for in the recipes, and purchase store-brand reduced sodium canned vegetables instead of the regular variety.

It was actually an interesting list. Very little meat, but lots of protein. Bookmark-worthy.

having a yard sale?

Posted in General, Retail Therapy at 4:04 pm by Paloma Cruz

Thinking of having a yard sale? Here’s a how-to that will get you started. A few tips I liked:

Put a price tag on everything, no matter how small.

and

Go to the bank and get $50 in $1s, $5s, and change.

and

If you have any question about the value of prospective yard sale items - especially antiques - have them appraised before you sell them.

and

Some communities have an ordinance against yard or garage sales. Be sure you know the law in your neighborhood.

I don’t have a yard, or a garage, so this doesn’t apply to me. My sister, however, is very fond of holding these.

links & a gadget I’d like to buy

Posted in General, News, Retail Therapy at 9:06 pm by Paloma Cruz

In the list of things I want for myself, I’m adding the LS800 from Motion Computing. A nifty little tablet PC, it looks like something I’d actually enjoy owning. Of course, for $1,899 MSRP, it should.

innovative business

Posted in Retail Therapy at 11:10 pm by Paloma Cruz

I love new ideas. Shop Girl pointed me to Lee’s Couture Closet, a designer consignment store operated via ebay. I’ve checked out her line of products and it there were a couple of things I’d like to buy. Maybe later.

Did you know that you can rent high-end bags instead of buying them? I didn’t. Two places that offer this service are From Bags to Riches and Bag Borrow or Steal. Very cool idea.

Of course, the last thing I need is more places to get stuff.

looking for silver jewelry

Posted in Retail Therapy at 7:18 pm by Paloma Cruz

I love silver jewelry. I adore silver jewelry. I prefer silver to gold anyday. I have earrings, chains, charms, bracelets, rings and other things.  All in silver.

So I’m always on the lookout for new and interesting places to buy accessories to add to my collection.

Special thanks to Shop Girl for sending me to J. Silver. I haven’t bought anything yet, but am sure that I will.

There are pieces to suit every budget, too, making J. Silver a good spot for quality jewelry, including precious and semi-precious pieces, throughout year.

Lenovo Yogatop

Posted in Retail Therapy at 8:23 pm by Paloma Cruz

I’m putting the Lenovo Yogatop on next year’s Christmas list… my birthday present list… my list of things I want for Valentine’s Day.

This multi-functional laptop is realised through the inclusion of an innovative soft hinge technology support that allows for three modes of self locking position: as a general laptop, tilted at 300 degree angle as a table display screen and bent over at 360 degree angle as a drawing pad. In keeping with the flexibility of use and transport, the Yoga laptop is designed with a detachable keyboard and wireless mouse.

I found this via Gizmodo, one of my favorite daily stops.

shopping tips

Shop Girl offers some last-minute shopping tips.  My favorite:

Go early, or late, and let someone else do the parking.

Of course, I think I’d prefer to let someone else do the shopping.

Xmas shopping list

Posted in Retail Therapy at 12:29 am by Paloma Cruz

And the silly things continue. Here’s one more thing to add to my “I want” list for Santa:

  • The Wonder Woman Cami and Panty Set is a really silly thing for someone my age to want. I would never be able to show it to anyone. But it’s still going on my list. :-)
